Burst and split pipes most often show up in winter, in runs through crawl spaces, garages, exterior walls and rim joists. A split frequently stays hidden while the line is frozen and only releases once it thaws, so a fixture that loses flow in a cold snap deserves attention straight away.
Sewer and drain backups are treated as urgent because of the contamination risk, not just the water. Multiple fixtures backing up at once usually means the blockage is in a shared branch or the main line rather than at any one fixture.
Water heater failures range from a slow tank seep to a full tank release. Either way the supply to the unit and its power or gas should be shut off before anything else.
Sump pump failure tends to be discovered during the storm rather than before it. If the basin is rising and the pump is not keeping up, call while there is still time to act.
Find and close the right shutoff. If the leak is at one fixture, use that fixture’s supply valve. If it is not isolated, or you cannot reach the valve, close the main shutoff. In most homes here the main is near where the supply enters the basement or crawl space, often close to the meter or pressure tank.
Water heaters. Shut off the cold supply at the top of the unit, then turn off its power at the breaker or its gas at the valve on the unit. Do not drain a hot tank.
Keep clear of standing water near electricity. If water is near outlets, a panel, or appliances, stay out of it and cut power at the breaker only if you can reach it safely and dry.
If you smell gas, leave first. Get everyone out of the building, then call from outside. Do not use switches, and do not go looking for the source.
Sewer backups. Stop running water anywhere in the house, including washing machines and dishwashers, so nothing adds to what is already backing up.
